It is not a dirk but a Skian Dubh (Black Knife) which you can carry in your
sock if in Highland dress, its blade is only a few inchs long.It is allowed
under the regulations regarding the carring of knifes.
A dirk is carried on the belt and can be around a foot long however IIRC it
is banned under the regulations.

I seem to remember that the only other exeption to the regulations are the
knifes/swords carried by Sikhs as part of their religion.
