no, you can carry a dirk quite happily and have a defence. There are four
defences to carrying a bladed or sharply pointed article (s139(1)CJA1988),
and these are:
(1) carried with good reason or lawful authority
(2) For use at work
(3) For religious reasons
(4) As part of any national costume.
So if you are carrying a dirk, you have to have the rest of the clothing on
as well. Having stuck down your belt on a Friday night in a pub in Glasgow
and claiming its national dress isn't really acceptable (though in some
parts of Glasgow I'd of thought it was national dress.... I'm going to get
flamed for that!)
