Dear All
I checked with the 'Oxford Companion to Food' and the author's opinion is
that the common belief is that rabbits were brought over by the Normans. He
also says, which I haven't seen elsewhere, that they were originally kept in
paved areas (as well as warrens) for easy retrieval of the young. this was
partly because the young and unborn rabbits didn't count as meat in the
dietary laws. I've seen the references to barnacle geese and otters tails,
but this is a new one on me. BTW looking at household acconuts suggest to
me that medieval people did follow the rules - there's a lot of fish being
bought.
Anyway, can't help with the film stuff, but at least they seem to be in the
right area with 1066.
